Circle of Support

Swanley House fully endorses the expectations of the Children Act, 1989, in that the promotion of quality contact between parents, extended family, friends and the 'looked after' individual is to be encouraged.

The immediate factor to establish is whether any legal restrictions are present, before agreeing with the child/young person, the Placing Agency and the relatives / friends how contacts can continue to be encouraged and supported.

In normal circumstances children/young people will have access to make private telephone calls and to receive visitors in private surroundings, where this is safe and appropriate. Furthermore, in such circumstances, the Home operates an 'open door' policy in respect of parents wishing to visit.

Every effort will be made to foster a positive rapport with natural family members, given that this approach will have a resounding effect upon the child/young person. Restrictions to visiting times will only apply should there be a disruptive effect upon the needs of the other children/young people, and this will be explained if it arises.

Full exploration of community based resources, including; swimming, cinema, shopping, parks, visits to zoos and the coast, etc.

Our overall ethos is that we firmly believe in giving the young people in our care the same opportunities to experience as wide a range of hobbies, activities and one off experiences as we would hope offer our own children.
